FNF Vs. Tricky Got a Glow-Up: Clowned Out Remakes the Classic Mod From Scratch

If you’ve been playing Friday Night Funkin mods for a while, you probably remember Vs. Tricky. Well, it’s back, and it’s had a serious makeover. Vs. Tricky: Clowned Out takes the original mod and rebuilds it with completely new art and animation, while keeping the same brutal four-phase fight against Tricky that made the original so memorable.

Tricky — yes, the clown from Madness Combat — is back in Nevada, ready to scream at Boyfriend all over again. Banbuds directed this remake and did the bulk of the artwork, teaming up with co-director Marc Cea, who handled programming and composing. The classic soundtrack from Rozebud and JADS is still intact too, sitting alongside a batch of brand-new Erect remixes. It came out in 2026, and the best part is you can just play it in your browser — kbhgames.com optimized it to run well even on weaker computers, so there’s nothing to download.

Fun little detail: Boyfriend and Girlfriend are both redesigned as Madness Combat grunts here, complete with the gray skin and tiny cross marking on the face. It’s a small touch, but it fits the whole vibe perfectly.

All the Songs, Broken Down

The main story, called CLOWN, covers Tricky’s first three phases, and there are three more songs sitting in freeplay for extra content. Also check FNF vs Impostor Legacy and FNF Bang Bang Bang

Story-wise, it kicks off with Tricky still masked up, then moves into a faster, angrier song once the mask comes off and the stage fills with signs everywhere. Then things go completely off the rails for the third song — Tricky turns into an enormous flaming skull monster, while Boyfriend shrinks down into a tiny chibi version of himself. The size difference alone makes this one of the more visually wild moments in the mod.

The final story phase only has one real difficulty option, with a blunt little name, and its remix version cranks things up even further under a different, more ominous name. Outside the story, there’s a freeplay track composed by Marc Cea where you go up against a redesigned Tricky in a dark, poster-plastered club room, plus a secret hidden song you can unlock by typing a specific word into the freeplay menu — it drops you straight into a fiery showdown with a whole new character.

The first three story songs give you Easy, Normal, Hard, plus the tougher Erect and Nightmare options on the remixes. The freeplay and secret songs keep it simpler with just Easy, Normal, and Hard.

How Do You Actually Beat the Last Two Phases?

Here’s the trick with the giant flaming skull phase: some notes come down as literal fire, and if you hit them, you take a huge chunk of damage. The move here is counterintuitive — you actually want to leave those notes alone and let them pass.

The final phase takes it further with what amounts to instant-death notes. Hit one, and the song just ends right there. Regular misses hurt more than usual in this phase too, and the screen fills with static every time you mess up.Also check VS Tricky [Full HD]

On top of that, you’ve got warning signs that flash three times, and you need to hit Space exactly on that third flash to dodge safely — jump the gun or wait too long and it counts as a miss either way. There’s also a little creature that shows up and starts draining your health for a few seconds, so you want to be in good shape before it arrives.

If this phase is kicking your butt (no shame, it’s brutal), there’s an easier setting hidden in the Preferences menu — it’s got a pretty rude name, honestly — that turns those instant-death notes into a big but survivable hit instead, and eases up on the health drain overall.

Before you close the mod, swing by the Extras menu. There’s a fanart gallery, some concept art, a music player, and the full credits list. Seriously, take a minute to zoom in on the redrawn flaming-skull art — it looks like it’s about to reach through the screen.

The Team Behind It

Making this mod took a genuinely big crew. Banbuds directed and did the main art and animation, with Marc Cea co-directing and pitching in on secondary art, animation, programming, sound design, and music. Programming support also came from fiffi the yoshi-sloth, Luscious77, and ChazbillyYT, while Az989 worked on menu experimentation. Rozebud’s original soundtrack is still front and center, with JADS composing more tracks, YingYang48 adding extra music, and Tsuraran throwing in a Chicken Dance remix for good measure. Mkv8 handled background art, ChubbyGamer464 did the charting, Weretoons animated the cutscenes, Tri-Dot drew the freeplay Tricky sprite, Braced Yeti made the promo art, KaosKurve designed the logo, and harveyzstuff put together the pixel icons.

Big shoutout also goes to EEF!, who directed the original 2025 Tricky project, Krinkels, who created Madness Combat and Tricky in the first place, and TPM Studios for backing the project.

Controls

Arrow keys or WASD hit the notes, Space dodges the signs during the final phase, Enter confirms, and Escape backs you out of menus. On mobile, you just tap the notes directly, and tap Girlfriend to pull off the dodge.

Quick Answers

Yes, it runs great on mobile — touch controls handle the menus, and dodging is a simple tap on Girlfriend instead of hitting Space. There are six songs total: the four phase battles that make up the story, plus the freeplay song and the secret unlockable track. And to be clear, this isn’t the original mod — it’s a full remake built years after the fact, with all-new sprites, animation, and remixed music, though you can still go play the original version if you want to compare.
